IEBC Opens CEO Applications With August Deadline
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has formally declared the post of Commission Secretary and Chief Executive Officer vacant and invited qualified people from the country to apply.
The notice, issued on July 28, comes as the electoral body intensifies preparations for the 2027 General Election. The successful applicant will serve a four-year contract that may be renewed once for a further four years, provided performance remains satisfactory.
The role carries significant responsibility. The Commission Secretary and CEO acts as the accounting officer and oversees the daily running of the secretariat, making the position one of the most influential within the institution. The incoming leader will be expected to manage key processes such as voter registration, procurement of election materials, logistics planning and the practical implementation of commission policies across the country.
The vacancy arose after the resignation of former CEO Marjan Hussein Marjan in February 2026. Since then, Moses Ledama Sunkuli has served as Acting Commission Secretary and Chief Executive Officer. Officials stress that filling the permanent post is essential at a time when the commission must rebuild and strengthen public confidence in electoral administration through transparent and efficient management.
Applicants must be citizens of the country, hold a degree from a recognised university and possess at least five years of proven management experience. They are also required to demonstrate expertise in at least one relevant field, including electoral matters, finance, governance, public administration, law or political science, and must satisfy the integrity standards set out in Chapter Six of the Constitution. Applications must reach the designated email address by 5:00 p.m. on August 11, 2026.
Shortlisted candidates will later present original identification and academic documents together with clearance certificates from relevant agencies. The eventual appointee will supervise permanent and temporary staff nationwide, oversee procurement and ensure the smooth delivery of all electoral activities. With the next general election already on the horizon, the recruitment is viewed as a critical step in securing competent leadership for the country’s electoral machinery.
