IEBC Registers Over Half a Million New Voters in One Week as Deadline Approaches

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has reported a significant surge in voter registration, adding 505,344 new voters in just the past week.

This brings the total number of newly registered voters since the Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) exercise began on March 30, 2026, to 1,876,274. The sharp increase highlights a last-minute rush by many Kenyans eager to join the voter roll before the exercise ends on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.

IEBC officials noted that the recent week saw heightened activity at registration centres across the country. Alongside the new registrations, the commission also processed 159,410 transfers of voting stations and 2,817 updates or changes to voter particulars. Many of the new registrants are young first-time voters, reflecting growing interest among the youth to participate in future elections.

The Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration was launched with the aim of expanding the national voter roll ahead of the 2027 general election. With only a few days remaining, the IEBC has urged eligible Kenyans who have not yet registered to do so promptly. The commission has expressed appreciation for the positive response so far and continues to encourage widespread participation to strengthen Kenya’s democratic process.

This late surge comes as political parties and civic groups intensify mobilisation efforts. Adding nearly 1.9 million new voters in under a month could have a notable impact on the electoral landscape, especially in closely contested constituencies. As the registration window closes, attention will shift to the cleaning and verification of the updated voter register to ensure accuracy and readiness for upcoming polls.
