IEBC Reports Strong Progress in Voter Registration Drive

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced encouraging results from its ongoing Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration exercise.

As of April 10, 2026, a total of 875,501 new voters have been successfully added to the register since the drive began on March 30. This figure reflects steady participation from citizens across the country as Kenya prepares for future elections. The commission expressed appreciation for the patriotic spirit shown by many Kenyans who have come forward to exercise their right to vote.

A significant portion of the new registrations happened in a short recent period. Between April 6 and April 9, the IEBC registered 531,185 additional voters. This sharp increase over just four days shows growing momentum in the exercise, which runs daily from Monday to Sunday at more than 30,000 gazetted centres nationwide, including Huduma centres and institutions of higher learning. The rapid rise demonstrates that efforts to bring registration services closer to the people are yielding positive outcomes.

Nairobi County has taken the lead in the number of new voters, with 96,879 registrations recorded so far. Other counties such as Kiambu and Kakamega have also shown notable numbers, while some areas recorded lower figures. The variation across regions highlights differences in awareness and access, prompting the IEBC to continue mobilising communities in all parts of the country. The exercise allows citizens to register at any polling station without needing to travel to their home areas, making the process more convenient than before.

The current 30-day drive, set to end on April 28, 2026, forms part of broader preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections. Alongside new registrations, the commission has also handled thousands of voter transfers and updates to personal details. IEBC officials continue to urge eligible Kenyans, especially young people and those who have recently turned 18, to take advantage of the remaining days. This nationwide effort aims to strengthen the voter register and ensure wider participation in the democratic process. As the exercise progresses, more updates are expected on the final numbers and how different counties have performed.
