Infantino Survives Crisis After Controversial Plan
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has emerged from a tense crisis meeting with his position intact after a controversial proposal to create a new subsidiary drew widespread condemnation.
The scheme, known as FIFA Forward Enterprise, would have allowed private investors to purchase stakes in major football prizes, including the World Cup, while offering member federations an incentive of forty million dollars each. What began as an ambitious commercial vision quickly unravelled under fierce opposition from across the global game.
UEFA denounced the initiative as a shabby back-room arrangement and threatened a boycott, while the Asian Football Confederation and Concacaf also voiced strong reservations. Even within FIFA’s own ranks the discomfort was clear. Secretary General Mattias Grafström described the preceding week in an internal memo as a sad and reproachable series of events. External criticism grew sharper still, with Jordan’s Prince Ali accusing the president of blackmail and former player Luis Figo declaring that the organisation’s problems could fill ten thousand words yet required only three to solve: Infantino must go.
The emergency gathering took place in Rabat at FIFA’s African headquarters rather than the Zurich base, a choice of venue that later attracted its own questions amid unconfirmed reports of favourable World Cup treatment for Morocco. After four hours of deliberation the management board delivered a decisive outcome. The privatisation plan was abandoned, a formal apology was issued, and Infantino was confirmed in office.
A letter circulated to all 211 member associations acknowledged that mistakes had been made, pledged that they would not be repeated, and committed the organisation to a thorough review. In parallel the management board recorded its continued support, describing Infantino as the sole president elected by the entire membership. The written reassurances sought to draw a line under the episode and restore a measure of calm.
Yet the apology has not fully extinguished the controversy. Several federations continue to withdraw quiet support ahead of the presidential election scheduled for March 2027, and a Canadian prime minister has publicly stated a loss of confidence in the leadership. While the immediate crisis has been contained, the broader questions surrounding FIFA’s direction and Infantino’s long-term standing remain unresolved.
