Iran Fires Missiles at US Bases During Trump Meeting
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched multiple ballistic missiles at United States military bases across the Middle East in what American officials described as an attempted surprise attack.
The United States Central Command confirmed that all the incoming missiles were intercepted, with five interceptions reported over Jordan, and stated that American forces remain at a high state of readiness.
The IRGC claimed responsibility for targeting a US airbase and a Central Command facility in Jordan, declaring that resistance would continue for as long as threats and what it called illegal actions against Iranian interests persisted. The strikes came only days after President Donald Trump had halted a two-week bombing campaign against Iran, citing progress in talks, although Tehran has denied any interest in resuming negotiations with Washington.
The Iranian action unfolded while Trump was meeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, a timing that analysts interpreted as a deliberate message. Observers noted that Netanyahu has been urging stronger measures against Iran, including concerns over construction at a site known as Pickaxe Mountain, while Tehran appears determined to regain initiative after the recent pause in hostilities.
In a parallel escalation, Iranian forces reported striking and stopping three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz after the vessels allegedly ignored warnings and followed unsafe routes. Iran also rejected a proposal from Oman for joint management of shipping traffic through the waterway, insisting instead on controlling its own side of the strait.
The dual developments immediately pushed oil prices higher, with US futures rising more than four percent and Brent crude climbing above eighty-eight dollars a barrel. As tensions continue to simmer, both the missile attacks and the maritime incidents underscore the fragile state of regional security and the challenges facing any renewed diplomatic efforts.
