Israeli Strike Near Beirut Shakes Fragile Ceasefire

Tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border have flared once again after an Israeli airstrike hit a residential area south of Beirut, killing at least 14 people including three children.
The attack targeted an apartment building in Choueifat, on the edge of the capital’s southern suburbs, a known stronghold for Hezbollah. This marks the second such Israeli raid in the Beirut area since a ceasefire was announced in April, raising fears of a wider escalation despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to restore calm.
Lebanese authorities reported heavy damage to the first two floors of the building, with residents seen hurriedly packing cars and fleeing the scene as smoke billowed overhead. Israel's military described the operation as a precise strike but did not disclose the specific target. Meanwhile, Hezbollah responded by claiming several rocket and drone attacks on Israeli troops in southern Lebanon, with both sides trading accusations of ceasefire violations that have prevented the truce from taking full effect.
The latest violence comes at a critical moment as Lebanon and Israel prepare for high-level military talks at the Pentagon on Friday, followed by another round of US-brokered negotiations early next week. These discussions represent the fourth attempt to stabilize the situation since the current round of conflict erupted in early March. UN peacekeepers have noted a worrying rise in incidents after an initial period of relative calm, highlighting the challenges in enforcing any lasting agreement between the parties.
As smoke clears from the Choueifat area, the strike underscores the persistent fragility of regional security arrangements. With civilians caught in the crossfire and diplomatic channels still active, the coming days will test whether talks can de-escalate hostilities or if mutual distrust will fuel further confrontations. The incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly fragile truces can unravel in one of the Middle East’s most volatile flashpoints.
