Jirongo's Death Investigation : Wetangula, Khaniri, 7 Climax bus passengers record statements with DCI

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has released an update on its ongoing inquiry into the tragic road accident that claimed the life of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo.

Jirongo, aged 64, lost his life in the early morning hours of December 13, 2025, when his vehicle collided head-on with a Climax Coach bus on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway.

So far, a total of 28 people have come forward to record statements with the DCI to aid the investigation. Among them are seven survivors from the bus involved in the crash, who voluntarily presented themselves.

Other notable individuals who provided statements include National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula, who did so early in the process, as well as former Vihiga Senator George Khaniri and his wife Eunice Chelagat—both described as close associates of the late politician.

According to the DCI, Khaniri and his wife visited the accident site on the day of the incident and helped arrange the movement of Jirongo's body from Naivasha Sub-County Hospital Mortuary to Lee Funeral Home.

The autopsy report determined that Jirongo died from multiple crush injuries resulting from blunt force trauma.

The DCI emphasized that the probe remains active, and upon completion, the investigation file will be submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions for review and any necessary next steps.

Initial findings indicate the collision was a standard road traffic incident, with no signs of criminal involvement detected so far. This assessment was shared by the agency as early as January 5, 2026.

Preliminary evidence also shows that Speaker Wetang'ula had met with Jirongo the previous evening, December 12, 2025, at Karen Oasis restaurant in Nairobi.

At Jirongo's burial, Khaniri publicly expressed doubts about the circumstances, noting that the deceased had mentioned plans to head home to Gigiri and had no intention of traveling to Naivasha. He questioned how Jirongo ended up on that route and suggested the narrative of him driving himself there did not align with what he knew of his friend.
