Jonah Koech Receives Three-Year Ban for Blood Doping

The 29-year-old has also been stripped of the 2025 United States 1,500-metre outdoor title he claimed last October. Investigators determined that highly atypical blood values recorded in his Athlete Biological Passport resulted from the use of a prohibited method.

USADA chief executive Travis T. Tygart highlighted the effectiveness of the monitoring system. “This case is proof that the Athlete Biological Passport can both deter and detect doping,” he said. “To ensure a fair playing field, every anti-doping organization needs this tool and the resources to use it effectively.” The first abnormal sample that triggered the investigation was collected on 30 July 2025, leading to the disqualification of all of Koech’s results from that date onward.

Koech had secured the national title in Eugene, Oregon, with a personal best of 3 minutes 30.17 seconds, a performance that earned him a place at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo. His thirteenth-place finish in the 1,500 metres at those championships has now been annulled as part of the sanctions. The ban itself formally began on 17 July 2026.

The case underscores the growing role of biological passport data in uncovering sophisticated doping methods that may not be detected through traditional sample testing alone. By accepting the three-year suspension, Koech has brought a swift conclusion to the proceedings while forfeiting the competitive achievements recorded during the period covered by the abnormal findings.

Anti-doping authorities continue to stress that consistent application of such tools remains essential for protecting clean athletes and maintaining public confidence in the integrity of track and field. For Koech the ruling marks a significant setback in a career that had recently reached a high point with a national championship and a world championship appearance.
