JSC Nominates Court of Appeal Judge Mohamed Warsame for Supreme Court Position

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has put forward Court of Appeal Judge Mohamed Abdulahi Warsame as the next judge of Kenya’s Supreme Court.

Chief Justice Martha Koome, who chairs the JSC, made the announcement on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, after a two-day interview process. Justice Warsame stood out among several experienced candidates and was selected as the most suitable person to fill the vacant seat at the highest court in the land

The position became available following the untimely death of Justice Mohammed Kadhar Ibrahim in December 2025. Justice Ibrahim passed away after a short illness, just days before he was due to begin his terminal leave ahead of retirement. The JSC advertised the opening in late January 2026, attracting applications from qualified judges. After careful review and public interviews, the Commission determined that Justice Warsame best met the high standards required for a Supreme Court judge, including strong professional ability, honesty, and dedication to justice and the rule of law.

Justice Warsame brings many years of service on the bench, having served at the Court of Appeal since 2012. His long career in the judiciary spans over three decades, during which he has handled complex legal matters. Chief Justice Koome noted that the selection followed all constitutional requirements and considered factors such as merit, fairness, and balance. The nominee’s name has now been sent to President William Ruto for formal appointment in accordance with the Constitution.

This development comes as the Judiciary prepares to introduce greater openness in its operations. Starting July 1, 2026, the Judiciary will begin publishing individual performance records for judges and other officers. The aim is to improve accountability, clear case backlogs, and make justice more accessible to ordinary citizens. Many in the legal community view Warsame’s nomination as a positive step toward strengthening the Supreme Court with experienced and principled leadership.

The nomination of Justice Mohamed Warsame highlights the ongoing efforts to maintain high standards within Kenya’s judiciary. Once confirmed, he will join the apex court at a time when public trust and efficiency in the justice system remain key national priorities. Legal observers will be watching closely to see how this appointment shapes future rulings at the highest level.
