Junet Mohammed : We were paid to impeach Gachagua
A senior lawmaker has openly claimed that members of parliament received payments to remove former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from office.
Speaking at a joint political gathering in Kakamega, Suna East MP Junet Mohamed stated that money changed hands in both the National Assembly and the Senate during the October 2024 impeachment process. He described the episode as one in which something tangible moved among legislators to secure the overwhelming support needed for the motion to succeed.
According to the MP, Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot handled the distribution of the funds that reached lawmakers. Mohamed declared, “Wakati tulikuwa tunafukuza Gachagua kazi, kuna kitu ilitembea hapo. Huko Bunge. Accounting officer alikuwa Aaron Cheruiyot.”
The admission came during a convention that brought together officials from the United Democratic Alliance and the Orange Democratic Movement, drawing attention across political circles in the country.
Mohamed went further, criticizing how some recipients handled the money they received. He urged colleagues to put the resources to better use by constructing solid homes rather than wasting them. In a pointed remark, he singled out an unnamed legislator who allegedly spent the funds on city girls instead of investing in property back home, highlighting what he saw as poor judgment among certain peers.
The MP continued by addressing those who now claim to have allies and seek to reconnect with the very person they helped remove. He added, “Sasa wengine wanatuambia wako na watu, na wanataka kutupeleka kwa mtu sisi tuli-impeach, tulifukuza yeye kazi. Na unajua Waziri, wakati tulikuwa tunafukuza Rigathi Gachagua kazi, kuna kitu ilitembea hapo… huku Bunge, wacha niseme ukweli.” These words were delivered in the compound of Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya, adding weight to an already charged political atmosphere that day.
The revelation has intensified discussions about integrity in the legislative process and the forces that shaped the impeachment outcome. While politicians from various sides used the weekend to advance their messages, Mohamed’s account of payments and their misuse has shifted focus toward questions of accountability and the true motivations behind one of the most significant votes in recent parliamentary history in the country.
