Kakamega - Two Young Cousins Drown in River Tragedy.
A heartbreaking incident claimed the lives of two young cousins who drowned while bathing in River Lusumu in Mumias East, Kakamega.
The boys, aged seven and ten, were swept away by strong water currents on Saturday evening at around 7:30 pm in Mululi Village, Kamashia Sub-location. Their bodies were later found floating in the river by responding officers.
The older boy was a Grade Three pupil at Kamashia Comprehensive School, while his seven-year-old cousin attended Grade Two at St Peter’s Mumias Primary School. Local residents and police confirmed that the children had gone to the river for a bath when the force of the water overpowered them. No visible injuries were observed on either body after they were retrieved from the water.
Officers visited the scene promptly and secured the area while examining the remains. Preliminary findings indicated that the drowning occurred as a result of the boys being caught in the river’s currents rather than any other apparent cause. The bodies were carefully recovered and transported for further examination.
Both children were taken to St Mary’s Mission Hospital mortuary, where they are being preserved pending postmortem examinations. The procedure is expected to provide additional confirmation of the cause of death and help authorities complete their records of the incident.
Police and local officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. The loss has left the affected families and the wider community in deep mourning, serving as a painful reminder of the dangers rivers can pose, especially to young children unsupervised near fast-moving water.
