Kapondi Denies Role in Murder of Political Aspirant, Nathan Wasama

The lawmaker accused former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of misleading the public by drawing a connection between him and the crime. Wasama, aged 61, was shot dead on the night of August 8 by unknown attackers riding two motorcycles at his shop in Tuikut Trading Centre within Sasur Location, Bungoma County. The deceased had been preparing to contest the Mount Elgon parliamentary seat.

Kapondi insisted that his conscience remains clear and that he has never engaged in eliminating political rivals throughout his career. He described Gachagua’s remarks as products of imagination rather than fact. “He should check on his words because it is proof that whatever he has been saying in the national scene is a figment of his own imagination. My conscience is clear. I have never been in the business of killing political opponents. It has never happened in my entire political career, and the late Wasama was never an opponent,” the MP stated.

The legislator also dismissed separate allegations that police recovered eighteen guns from his residence during a search. He maintained that he neither threatened the late aspirant nor received any summons from investigators regarding the incident. “If I had threatened him, he would have filed a report with the police. He never did that, and if there was a threat to his life, then I would have been summoned to write a statement. There is nothing like that,” Kapondi added.

Calling for a full and impartial probe into the murder, Kapondi cautioned against turning the tragedy into a platform for political point-scoring. He argued that exploiting a person’s death for partisan gain is both wrong and disrespectful to the victim’s family and the community. The MP stressed that justice for Wasama should remain the priority rather than unfounded accusations.

Meanwhile, five individuals suspected of involvement in the killing have been arrested and remain in police custody as investigations continue. Authorities are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the attack and to bring those responsible to account. The case has drawn local attention amid rising political temperatures in the region ahead of future elections.
