Kenya and Tanzania Strengthen Ties with New Agreements

President William Ruto of Kenya and President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania have signed eight important agreements aimed at deepening cooperation between the two countries.
The deals cover key areas including energy, agriculture, railway development, legal matters, maritime cooperation, public service capacity building, certification standards for seafarers, and harmonisation of standards. The signing reflects a strong commitment by both leaders to work together for mutual growth and regional development.
The two presidents welcomed the continued increase in bilateral trade, which reached 860.3 million US dollars in 2025. They agreed to remove all remaining non-tariff barriers by June 30, 2026, in order to make trade easier and more profitable for businesses on both sides. In addition, they pledged to boost tourism by unlocking its full potential and by encouraging stronger people-to-people connections between Kenyans and Tanzanians.
Energy cooperation was highlighted as a major focus area. Both countries committed to working more closely in this sector to support industrial growth and improve the lives of citizens. They also praised the ongoing construction of the Malindi-Bagamoyo Super Highway, describing it as a game-changer that will greatly improve transport links, trade, and connectivity across the region.
This latest push for closer cooperation comes at an important time as the two neighbours seek to overcome past challenges and build a more integrated East African economy. The agreements are expected to open new opportunities in trade, infrastructure, and tourism while fostering better understanding between the people of Kenya and Tanzania.
