Kenya Braces for Intensified Downpours Through Monday, Met Department Alerts

The Kenya Meteorological Department has raised concerns with a fresh heavy rainfall advisory, projecting that intense showers will escalate and persist across multiple regions until Monday, March 9, 2026.

Building on ongoing wet conditions, the forecast indicates a peak in rainfall strength particularly between March 6 and March 9, with widespread heavy downpours expected in urban centers and surrounding areas. Nairobi stands out as a focal point, where sub-counties including Westlands, Dagoretti, Roysambu, Kibra, Embakasi, Makadara, Kamukunji, Lang’ata, Kasarani, and Mathare are likely to face significant deluges.

Nearby counties are also set to bear the brunt of the intensified weather pattern. Kiambu is anticipated to receive substantial rainfall in areas such as Gatundu North and South, Thika Town, Juja, Ruiru, Limuru, Kikuyu, and Githunguri. Parts of Kajiado and Machakos counties will see isolated to widespread showers, affecting locations like Kajiado North, Masinga, Mavoko, Kathiani, and Machakos Town. Broader national impacts include risks in low-lying urban zones, with potential for flash flooding, slippery roadways causing transport disruptions, reduced visibility for drivers, and elevated river levels in downstream areas.

Residents across the affected regions have been urged to stay alert and take necessary precautions amid the heightened hazard potential. Authorities recommend avoiding travel through flooded sections, steering clear of fast-flowing water bodies, and exercising extra care on the roads. The advisory emphasizes vigilance as the heavy rains continue, with the Meteorological Department stressing proactive measures to mitigate weather-related dangers during this period of intensified precipitation.
