Kenya Braces for Intensified Rainfall Starting Thursday as Met Department Issues Outlook

The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned that rainfall across several parts of the country is set to increase in intensity beginning Thursday, March 20, 2026
This development comes as the ongoing March rains continue to affect large areas, with forecasters expecting more widespread showers and occasional thunderstorms over the coming days. Residents in key regions have been advised to prepare for wetter conditions that could bring both relief to dry areas and risks of flooding or disruptions in low-lying zones.
According to the weekly weather outlook covering March 17 to 23, 2026, enhanced rainfall is anticipated particularly over the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley itself, the South-Eastern Lowlands, and the Coastal region. Isolated heavy downpours are likely in some locations within these areas, which could lead to flash floods, especially in places already experiencing saturated soils. Nairobi and its surrounding counties fall within the Highlands East of the Rift, meaning city residents should expect more frequent afternoon showers and possible thunderstorms as the week progresses.
While the southern and central parts of Kenya gear up for heavier rains, parts of the North-Eastern and North-Western regions are expected to remain mostly dry and sunny, though occasional light showers cannot be entirely ruled out. The Met Department has urged the public to stay updated through official channels and take necessary precautions such as clearing drainage systems, avoiding flood-prone areas, and securing loose items outdoors. Farmers may benefit from the additional moisture for planting or crop growth, but those in vulnerable zones are encouraged to monitor weather updates closely to safeguard their property and livestock. This pattern aligns with the broader long rains season, which typically peaks in April.
