Kenya tightens border surveillance Amid Ebola

The government has intensified surveillance measures across all border counties following renewed concerns over the spread of the Ebola virus disease in neighboring countries.
Principal Secretary in the State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services, Belio R. Kipsang, has assured Kenyans that robust mechanisms have been put in place to safeguard public health and prevent any possible outbreak within the country.
Speaking in Busia after a high-level consultative meeting with the National Government Administrative Officers (NGAO) team across the county, Dr. Kipsang emphasized that the government is not taking any chances.
“We have heightened surveillance at all entry points, especially in border counties, to ensure early detection and swift response to any suspected cases,” he stated.
His remarks come amid reports of confirmed Ebola cases in neighboring Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where at least one fatality has been reported, raising regional alarm.
Dr. Kipsang noted that immigration officers, in collaboration with health officials and security agencies, have been deployed strategically to monitor cross-border movement. Screening procedures have also been reinforced at key points of entry, including the busy Busia border, a critical gateway between Kenya and Uganda.
He further reassured the public that the government is working closely with regional health bodies and international partners to track developments and respond proactively.
Public awareness campaigns are also being rolled out to educate communities living along border areas on preventive measures, symptoms, and the importance of reporting suspected cases promptly.
Health experts warn that while Ebola is highly infectious, early detection and containment remain key to preventing widespread transmission.
As the situation evolves, authorities continue to urge Kenyans to remain vigilant, adhere to health advisories, and avoid unnecessary cross-border travel unless absolutely essential.
The government maintains that with coordinated efforts and strict enforcement of health protocols, the country remains well-prepared to avert any potential outbreak.
