Kenyans Raise Over Ksh 70,000 to Support Skater Kelvin Kiarie

Kenyans have shown strong support for young skater Kelvin Kiarie by raising more than Ksh 70,000 to help him continue his sporting journey.

The contributions came after the skater returned from the International Challenge Cotonou Speed and Inline Freestyle Skating Championship in Benin, where he won gold and silver medals without any official government or federation backing. Many people were moved by stories of how Kiarie funded his trip mostly on his own and with help from fellow skaters and family.

The young athlete, also known as Kevin Kiarie Ruhiu, competed in Benin earlier in April 2026 and achieved impressive results in freestyle and slalom events. Upon his return, the Nairobi skating community organised a big celebration, with skaters taking to the streets to honour his success. At the same time, social media users highlighted the lack of support from sports authorities, which sparked widespread calls for assistance. Ordinary Kenyans quickly responded by contributing money through various online platforms to cover future training, travel, and competition costs.

This generous outpouring of support has been welcomed as a sign of national pride and community spirit. Kiarie has expressed deep thanks to everyone who helped him, including his parents and the skating family. The funds are expected to ease some of the financial pressure he faces as he prepares for upcoming events, such as competitions in Egypt. Many hope the positive response will encourage greater recognition and backing for athletes in less mainstream sports like inline skating.
