Kilifi Man Receives 30-Year Sentence for Fatally Stabbing Wife in Instagram-Related Dispute

The High Court in Mombasa has handed down a 30-year prison sentence to 40-year-old Murad Awadh Mbarak for the brutal murder of his 28-year-old wife, Nuru Ibrahim, following a heated argument over her decision to join Instagram against his wishes.
Justice Wendy Kagendo Micheni delivered the verdict, convicting Mbarak of the crime committed on June 19, 2022, in Majengo Kanamai, Kilifi County. The court heard that the incident stemmed from ongoing domestic disputes, culminating in Mbarak allegedly stripping his wife naked and stabbing her multiple times in the presence of their six children and neighbors. Prosecutors emphasized that the accused deliberately obstructed attempts by bystanders to rescue the victim, who succumbed to her injuries despite efforts to save her.
During the trial, evidence presented by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) painted a picture of escalating violence in the couple's relationship, with the Instagram account serving as the final trigger. Witnesses recounted the horrific scene, where Nuru Ibrahim, a mother of six, was attacked in broad daylight, leading to widespread shock in the community. Mbarak had initially sought leniency from the court, but Justice Micheni highlighted the cruelty and premeditated nature of the act, rejecting any mitigating factors. The sentencing underscores the judiciary's stance against gender-based violence, particularly in cases involving controlling behaviors over social media usage.
This case has sparked broader discussions on domestic abuse and the role of social media in modern relationships, with advocates calling for increased awareness and support for victims. The 30-year term reflects a commitment to holding perpetrators accountable, while also serving as a deterrent amid rising reports of intimate partner violence in Kenya. As Mbarak begins his sentence, the tragedy leaves behind a family grappling with profound loss, highlighting the urgent need for interventions to prevent such senseless acts rooted in jealousy and control.
