Kirinyaga Woman Arraigned in Court Over Alleged Fake Police Recruitment Scam

A woman from Ngurubani town in Kirinyaga County has found herself in serious legal trouble after being accused of running a fraudulent scheme that preyed on desperate job seekers hoping to join the National Police Service.

Mercy Prudence Baika Mutie appeared in court facing multiple counts of obtaining money through false pretences, a common tactic where individuals exploit people’s dreams of stable government employment. The case has drawn attention in the region, highlighting how con artists continue to target vulnerable citizens with promises of shortcuts into coveted public sector jobs.

According to the charges, Mutie allegedly collected substantial sums from several complainants by falsely assuring them she could secure police positions for them. The amounts involved ranged from hundreds of thousands to over half a million shillings per victim, with specific cases including payments of Ksh 400,000, Ksh 100,000, Ksh 600,000, and Ksh 500,000. The victims named in the case include Dorris Njoki Njiru, Harrison Njenga Njuguna, and Maureen Kariuki Njeru. She was charged with five counts under Section 313 of the Penal Code for these deceptive transactions.

On March 16, 2026, Mutie denied all the charges when she appeared before Principal Magistrate S.K. Kandie at the Wang’uru Principal Magistrate’s Court. Represented by lawyer John Baptista Kanga, she was granted bail on a bond of Ksh 500,000 with a similar surety amount. The case has been scheduled for mention on March 24, 2026, while the full hearing is set for June 23, 2026. This development serves as a reminder for job seekers to remain cautious and verify any recruitment claims through official channels to avoid falling victim to similar scams.
