Labour Day Celebrations Set to Take Place Today at Chavakali High School, Vihiga County

Kenya will today, May 1, 2026, mark Labour Day with national celebrations hosted at Chavakali High School in Vihiga County.

This is the first time in many years that the main national event is being held in a school setting, highlighting the important link between education, skills development, and the dignity of labour.

The event is expected to be attended by top government officials, labour union leaders, county governors, and thousands of workers from across the country. Activities will include official speeches, cultural performances, student exhibitions, and recognition of outstanding workers. The theme for this year’s celebrations focuses on fair labour practices, job creation for the youth, and strengthening workers’ welfare.

Chavakali High School was chosen as the venue to emphasise the role of young people in the future workforce. Students have been actively involved in preparations, including debates and presentations on employment challenges facing the country. Tree planting exercises and sports activities are also planned as part of the day’s programme.

This national event comes at a time when Kenya continues to address issues such as youth unemployment, workers’ rights, and improving working conditions across different sectors. Labour leaders are expected to present their concerns and proposals to the government during the celebrations.

As the country marks this important day, all eyes are on Vihiga County, where Kenyans from various regions will gather at Chavakali High School to celebrate the contributions of workers towards nation-building. The national festivities will be broadcast live for those unable to attend in person.
