Leadership Shake-Up in Presidential Escort Unit

The National Police Service has rolled out significant personnel changes in its elite protection teams, with Noah Kirwa Maiyo being replaced as Commandant of the Presidential Escort Unit.

In a move intended to bolster operational effectiveness, Maiyo has been reassigned to the Kenya Police Headquarters in the Vigilance Department. These adjustments come shortly after a high-profile security breach during President William Ruto’s recent engagement in Kilifi, signaling a proactive effort to refine command structures around the head of state’s safety.

Additional shifts include William Sawe stepping up from the Recce Sub Unit to assume the top role in the Presidential Escort Unit, while George Kirera takes over as Deputy Commandant. Juda Mathews Gwiyo, previously serving as Deputy Commandant, has been directed to proceed on leave ahead of retirement. These targeted reassignments aim to inject fresh leadership and address any coordination gaps that may have emerged in recent public events.

The broader reshuffle also touches the Recce Sub Unit, where Josphat Sirma has been promoted to Commanding Officer. Another officer, Rere Kipkoech, moves to headquarters in the Vigilance Department. Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat signed off on the changes, which took immediate effect, underscoring a commitment to strengthening specialized units responsible for high-level security duties.

This strategic overhaul reflects ongoing efforts to maintain robust protection for Kenya’s leadership amid evolving challenges. By refreshing key positions, authorities hope to enhance readiness, improve response capabilities, and restore full confidence in the presidential security framework. The changes could play a vital role in preventing future incidents while allowing public access to remain a cornerstone of democratic engagement.
