The family of 27-year-old Laura Ajiambo Wesonga has called on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to launch an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death after she was fatally shot during clashes between police officers and youths in Marachi, Busia County.

Laura was killed on Monday 29th June 2027,during unrest that erupted in Marachi village-Busia County, an incident that has since heightened tension in the area and renewed calls for accountability in the conduct of security operations.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Laura's father, Albert Wesonga Wafula, said that they believe she was an innocent bystander caught up in the confrontation. According to the family, Laura was attempting to seek safety when she was struck by a stray bullet in the side.

The family says her death has left them devastated and searching for answers.

"We have lost a daughter who had her whole life ahead of her. We are appealing for justice and for the truth about what happened to be established," the family said.

They have criticized what they describe as the excessive use of Police force during the operation, arguing that while police have a constitutional duty to maintain law and order, they must also safeguard the lives and rights of civilians during security operations.

They now urge IPOA to carry out a prompt, thorough and transparent investigation to establish the facts surrounding Laura's death and determine whether any officers bear responsibility.

In addition, they have also appealed to Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen to intervene and ensure that investigations are conducted independently, without interference, and that justice is served.

The latest incident comes amid growing concern over violence linked to recent unrest in Busia County. Laura's death brings to five the number of people reported to have been fatally shot in Busia in less than a month during incidents associated with the ongoing unrest. The fatalities have heightened anxiety among residents and intensified calls for accountability over the use of force during security operations.

Authorities are yet to release the findings of investigations into Laura's death and the other fatal shooting incidents reported in Busia in recent weeks.
