Matatu Saccos Hike Fares as Fuel Shortage Worsens

Matatu operators have increased fares following a deepening fuel shortage in the county. Several Saccos announced the new rates effective immediately, citing difficulties in accessing petrol and diesel at the usual pump prices.
According to operators, many petrol stations are either completely dry or selling fuel in very limited quantities. This has forced drivers to source fuel from distant stations at higher costs or queue for long hours, raising their operating expenses significantly.
The fare adjustments vary depending on the route. For instance, short distances within town that previously cost Ksh 50 have now gone up to Ksh 70 or Ksh 80. Longer routes have also seen increases of between Ksh 20 and Ksh 50. Commuters expressed frustration over the sudden hike, saying it adds more burden to their daily expenses at a time when the cost of living is already high.
The situation is expected to worsen in the coming days if fuel supplies are not restored quickly. Matatu owners have appealed to the government and fuel suppliers to address the shortage urgently to avoid further disruptions in public transport services.
