MP Kaguchia Arrested Over Controversial Rally Remarks
Mukurwe-ini Member of Parliament John Kaguchia was taken into custody by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations early on Monday morning at the offices of Royal Media Services.
Officers arrived to detain him following claims that comments he delivered during a weekend political gathering in Kieni, Nyeri County, amounted to inflammatory speech. The lawmaker had remained at the media premises overnight after appearing on a live television program, and a regional commander confirmed he would be escorted to offices on Valley Road for further questioning.
Before the arrest took place, Kaguchia spoke to another television station and maintained that his words from the rally had been deliberately distorted. He pointed to social media activity by a government digital strategist and several other legislators from the Mount Kenya area as the source of a skewed version of events that prompted the action against him. The MP noted that he had received no formal summons and expressed readiness to appear before the relevant national cohesion body to address the matter directly.
In the hours leading up to his detention, Kaguchia had already raised alarms about a heavy security presence surrounding the media headquarters. He described groups of masked and armed individuals in civilian attire arriving with multiple vehicles and setting up barriers that disrupted traffic near the studios. In a public message, he declared that he would not be intimidated by the show of force that followed his television interview.
The controversy traces back to remarks the parliamentarian made in his local language at the Kieni meeting, where he appeared to caution residents against backing President William Ruto in the 2027 general election and suggested that supporters of the head of state might face being driven from their homes. Those statements quickly drew sharp criticism from the presidential adviser and a prominent senior counsel, who both argued that such language had no place in the country’s political discourse and risked fostering intolerance.
As online discussions continued to split between those who viewed the comments as dangerous and others who insisted they had been taken out of context, the arrest itself underscored rising tensions in the political landscape.
