MPs approve Ida Odinga's appointment as Kenya’s UNEP Ambassador

The National Assembly has given its approval to the nomination of Canon Dr. Ida Betty Odinga, popularly known as Mama Ida Odinga, as Kenya's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

President William Ruto nominated her for the position earlier in 2026, and following her vetting by the Departmental Committee on Defence, Intelligence and Foreign Relations on February 20, 2026, the full House endorsed the appointment. Lawmakers praised her extensive contributions to the nation, highlighting her dedication to social justice, community empowerment, and environmental advocacy, and expressed strong confidence in her ability to represent Kenya effectively at the UNEP headquarters in Nairobi.

The approval process began with the committee, chaired by Belgut MP Nelson Koech, tabling a positive report in the House on February 24, 2026, recommending her confirmation. In the plenary session held shortly after, MPs debated and voted to adopt the recommendation, formally clearing the way for her to assume the diplomatic role. This appointment comes as she replaces the previous holder, who was reassigned, and underscores Kenya's commitment to advancing global environmental issues through experienced leadership.

Ida Odinga has already accepted the nomination and thanked supporters for their congratulations, viewing the role as an opportunity to serve the country on an international stage focused on sustainable development and environmental stewardship. Her background in public service and principled advocacy was frequently cited during the proceedings as key qualifications for amplifying Kenya's voice in UNEP matters. The decision reflects bipartisan support in Parliament, marking a significant step in her transition to this high-profile global position.
