Mumias East DCC Targets Night Discos, Political Meetings Near Schools

MUMIAS EAST, Kakamega — Mumias East Deputy County Commissioner Beatrice Odira has warned organisers of Disco Matanga and politicians against activities that threaten the safety of learners and interfere with education.

Odira, speaking during a security baraza on Monday, directed chiefs and assistant chiefs to enforce the ban on overnight discos, cautioning that the gatherings have been linked to drug abuse, defilement of minors and increased school absenteeism.

She warned that anyone found organising or hosting the prohibited events would be arrested and prosecuted, insisting that the protection of children and the uninterrupted running of schools must be prioritised.

The administrator also put politicians on notice over meetings and rallies held near learning institutions, saying such activities create unnecessary noise, disrupt lessons and may expose learners to political influence.

With national examinations approaching, Odira said security officers would collaborate with education stakeholders and local elders to ensure schools remain safe and learners concentrate on their studies.

The directive comes amid a wider government push to curb Disco Matanga in the Western region, following Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen's call for county commissioners to ban the night events over concerns about insecurity and alleged criminal activities.
