Ida Odinga, the widow of the late Raila Odinga, recently declared during her parliamentary vetting that her personal net worth stands at approximately Ksh 500 million.
This disclosure came while she was being considered for the position of Kenya’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). She appeared before the National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Defence, Intelligence, and Foreign Relations, where she clearly distinguished her individual assets from those of the broader Odinga family.
She explained that certain properties and holdings belong solely to her, while others are tied to the Oginga family estate, in which she also maintains an interest. "There are things that belong to me and those that belong to the Oginga family for whom I also have interest, but mine is about Ksh.500 million," Ida stated during the session. She did not provide further details on the specific sources or composition of her personal wealth.
The statement formed part of a broader vetting process in which Ida also shared her vision for the diplomatic role, focusing on environmental protection, grassroots impact, and advancing Kenya’s and Africa’s priorities at UNEP. She paid tribute to her late husband Raila Odinga for his support over their 52-year marriage, crediting him as a major influence on her life and character. The committee is expected to deliberate and present its recommendations to the full National Assembly for approval.
