As relentless heavy rains continue to pound Nairobi and its environs, the Water Resources Authority (WRA) has issued a stern alert to communities living downstream of Nairobi Dam, urging immediate relocation to higher ground to avert potential disaster.
The dam's water levels have risen dangerously high, putting its earthen embankment at serious risk of failure and triggering widespread flooding concerns. This development has heightened anxiety among residents, many of whom have already begun monitoring weather updates closely while preparing emergency kits.
WRA's Nairobi Sub-Regional Coordinator, Noel Ndeti, emphasized the urgency in an official notice, highlighting that ongoing downpours could soon overwhelm the structure. "Due to the ongoing heavy rains, residents living downstream of the Nairobi Dam are warned of imminent flood risk due to the rising water levels in the reservoir that threaten breaching of the dam embankment," the statement read. Authorities are advising all individuals and businesses in the affected zones to stay alert, avoid low-lying areas, and shift to safer elevations away from the water's potential flow path. This proactive measure aims to minimize loss of life and property as teams continue to monitor the situation round the clock.
The advisory specifically targets vulnerable neighborhoods including Kibera, Nyayo Highrise, Dam Estate, Lang’ata, Nairobi West, and Madaraka, with additional nearby areas placed on high alert. Compounding the threat is a fresh heavy rainfall warning from the Kenya Meteorological Department, predicting moderate to heavy showers exceeding 20 millimeters in 24 hours across Nairobi until Monday morning. In response, local leaders are calling for community cooperation, enhanced drainage maintenance, and support for at-risk families, while experts stress the importance of long-term infrastructure upgrades to better withstand climate-induced extremes in the capital.
