Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna Defends His Role as ODM Secretary-General Amid Party Shake-Up.

In a defiant press conference held shortly after the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) announced his removal, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna insisted that he remains the legitimate Secretary-General of the party.

The controversy erupted following a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Mombasa, where ODM officials decided to relieve Sifuna of his duties with immediate effect. The party cited concerns over conduct and discipline, and named Deputy Secretary-General Catherine Omanyo as the acting replacement.

Sifuna, however, dismissed the decision as unlawful and unconstitutional. He emphasized that he had never been formally notified of any allegations of indiscipline, nor was he invited to any disciplinary hearing or given a chance to respond.

"The action is illegal and unconstitutional," Sifuna stated during the address. "At no time have I been informed of indiscipline. No organ of the party has invited me for any disciplinary action."

Flanked by prominent figures including Siaya Governor James Orengo, EALA MP Winnie Odinga, and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Sifuna highlighted ongoing efforts by party trustees, Mama Ida Odinga, and Winnie Odinga to foster unity within ODM. He referenced earlier comments made in Busia, declaring, "Raila did not raise cowards," and vowed to contest the move through legal channels.

"We will challenge any decision before the courts," he added, reaffirming his commitment to the party and its members.

The development comes against a backdrop of internal tensions in ODM, including factional disputes that have persisted following the passing of its longtime leader Raila Odinga. The party's recent actions also appear to signal a broader restructuring, with reports of purges targeting certain alliances ahead of future elections.

Sifuna concluded by maintaining his loyalty to ODM while positioning himself as the duly elected Secretary-General, setting the stage for a potential legal and political battle within one of Kenya's major political parties.
