National Assembly Energy Committee Summons CS Wandayi

The National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Energy has summoned Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi and heads of key agencies to appear before it tomorrow, Thursday, April 9, 2026.

The officials have been asked to explain how substandard fuel found its way into the Kenyan market and to give a clear update on the current status of fuel stocks in the country.

Among those summoned are:

Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi (Ministry of Energy and Petroleum)

Managing Director of the Kenya Pipeline Company

Director General of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA)

Chief Executive of the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS)

The committee wants detailed answers on how the controversial fuel was imported, tested, and cleared, and why it was allowed into circulation despite quality concerns. Members of Parliament are also expected to demand clarification on the exact days of fuel reserves currently available and the measures being taken to prevent future shortages or quality failures.

The summons come amid growing public anxiety over fuel prices and quality following the recent arrest and subsequent release on bail of former senior energy officials. The committee meeting is likely to be tense as lawmakers seek accountability in the multi-billion-shilling fuel procurement saga.
