NTSA Rolls Out Graduated Speeding Fines

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has detailed a strict, tiered penalty structure for motorists caught exceeding speed limits, as part of a major push to enhance road safety through automated enforcement

Under the Traffic (Minor Offences) Rules, 2016, drivers who go beyond the prescribed speed limit for their vehicle class, the general 50 kph urban limit, or any posted traffic sign face graduated fines based on how much they exceed it. A minor overrun of 1-5 kph results in just a warning, serving as a gentle reminder to slow down. However, the penalties quickly escalate: exceeding by 6-10 kph triggers an instant fine of Ksh 500, while going 11-15 kph over draws a steeper Ksh 3,000 penalty. The most severe in this scale—16-20 kph above the limit—carries a hefty Ksh 10,000 fine, emphasizing the authority's zero-tolerance stance on reckless speeding.

NTSA officials highlight that speeding remains a leading cause of road accidents in Kenya, contributing significantly to fatalities and economic losses. By automating detection and fines for this and 36 other minor offenses, the authority hopes to foster greater discipline on the roads. Motorists are urged to adhere strictly to posted limits, especially in urban zones capped at 50 kph, to avoid these escalating penalties and potential license impacts. The full schedule was recently published in public notices, signaling that the era of manual enforcement is giving way to a more efficient, tech-driven approach.
