NTSA Steps Up Enforcement After Deadly Nyeri-Nyahururu Road Accident

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has announced tougher road safety measures following a tragic accident that claimed 15 lives on Saturday, 28 March 2026.

The head-on collision happened along the Nyeri-Nyahururu road near Dedan Kimathi University. A lorry swerved into the path of an oncoming matatu (PSV) while trying to avoid cyclists, resulting in the fatal crash.

NTSA Director General Nashon Kondiwa described the incident as “deeply distressing” and “a preventable catastrophe.” He said a multi-agency team has been sent to the scene for forensic investigation, vehicle inspection, and to check compliance with traffic laws. The authority will also audit the PSV operator and the lorry owner to determine if safety and licensing standards were followed.

In response, NTSA has intensified enforcement operations along the Nyeri-Nyahururu corridor and other major highways. The focus is on removing unroadworthy vehicles, especially commercial trucks and public service vehicles, from the roads. Kondiwa warned that recklessness on Kenyan roads is a choice with deadly consequences and promised that anyone found responsible through negligence will be held accountable. This latest accident has once again highlighted the urgent need for better road discipline and vehicle maintenance in the country.
