NTSA to enforce mandatory inspections of all vehicles by June 2027

Motorists in Kenya have received some breathing space as the National Transport and Safety Authority pushes back the start of compulsory vehicle inspections for private vehicles.

NTSA Director General Nashon Kondiwa announced that full enforcement will now begin in June 2027, giving the authority time to build more inspection facilities across the country. This adjustment comes after realizing that current centres are not enough to handle millions of vehicles nationwide.

At present, the authority operates only 17 inspection centres and plans to increase public ones to 47 by the end of 2026, while licensing around 70 private centres by mid-2027. During this period, vehicle checks will remain voluntary for private car owners starting from July 1. However, commercial vehicles and public service vehicles must continue meeting existing inspection rules for licensing purposes.

The move aims to ensure the system is well-prepared before making inspections mandatory for everyone. NTSA will examine key safety features such as brakes, headlights, and vehicle identification to match records. This delay has been welcomed by many private owners who were worried about immediate requirements and potential disruptions.

By expanding its network of centres, NTSA hopes to improve road safety standards effectively. The authority remains committed to reducing accidents through better vehicle maintenance. Drivers are encouraged to take advantage of voluntary inspections in the meantime to keep their cars in good condition and support safer roads in the country.
