ODM Shakes Up Vihiga Leadership as Internal Tensions Rise
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has carried out a significant leadership reshuffle in Vihiga County, appointing Governor Wilber Ottichilo as the new county patron.
Senator Godfrey Osotsi has been removed from the key role amid ongoing divisions within the party over its future direction and alliances. The changes were announced during a county delegates’ meeting aimed at strengthening ODM’s structure ahead of upcoming elections.
Party officials explained that the reshuffle targets leaders perceived as no longer fully advancing the party’s interests. Ottichilo welcomed the appointment, noting that recent months had seen a lack of clear direction and internal rifts that needed urgent addressing. He expressed hope that the new leadership will help restore unity and push the party forward effectively.
The move adds to recent setbacks for Osotsi, who was earlier removed as ODM deputy party leader. He is closely linked to the Linda Mwananchi Movement associated with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, which advocates for ODM to maintain a strong independent identity while criticising certain government policies. This faction has clashed with others in the party favouring deeper cooperation with the ruling coalition.
As ODM engages in talks for a possible pre-election alliance with UDA, these internal adjustments highlight the challenges of balancing different viewpoints within the party. The Vihiga changes are part of a broader reorganisation that could shape ODM’s strategy as Kenya prepares for 2027.
