Opposition Gives 24-Hour Ultimatum to PS Raymond Omollo to Resign Over Attack on Senator Osotsi

Opposition leaders have issued a 24-hour ultimatum to Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo demanding that he resign immediately over the violent attack on Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi in Kisumu.

The demand was made on Thursday, April 9, 2026, during a press briefing led by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka. The opposition accuses Omollo of being behind the hiring of goons who carried out the assault and links him to a pattern of political intimidation against critics of the government.

The attack happened on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, inside a restaurant in Kisumu. CCTV footage showed Senator Osotsi being pinned to the floor and repeatedly slapped and kicked by a group of youths as he tried to shield himself and escape. He suffered injuries and was airlifted to a hospital in Nairobi for treatment. Opposition leaders described the incident as a targeted and coordinated act of violence meant to silence dissenting voices, coming shortly after another assault on opposition figures ahead of a rally in Kakamega.

Kalonzo Musyoka stated that if Omollo does not resign by Friday morning, President William Ruto should sack him, warning that failure to act would lead to further action against both. Other leaders, including Siaya Governor James Orengo and Saboti MP Caleb Amisi, criticised the police and Directorate of Criminal Investigations for the slow pace of investigations despite clear video evidence of the attackers. They called for the immediate arrest of those involved and urged the government to stop what they described as state-sponsored violence. The ultimatum has heightened political tensions as the country awaits the next steps from the authorities.
