Peru’s Electoral Authority Calls for Full Audit of Disputed Election Results

Peru’s National Jury of Elections has requested a comprehensive information technology audit of the recent general election results to address ongoing uncertainties.

The move comes after the April 12 vote, where counting remains incomplete even after several weeks. With only 97.5 percent of ballots processed, officials hope the independent review will help bring clarity and restore public confidence in the electoral process.

Conservative candidate Keiko Fujimori currently leads the first round, but no clear second-place finisher has emerged to challenge her in a potential June runoff. Left-wing congressman Roberto Sanchez and ultra-conservative Rafael Lopez Aliaga are locked in a very close contest for the runner-up position, separated by roughly 28,000 votes. Disputed tally sheets from more than a million ballots are still under review, contributing to the prolonged uncertainty.

The audit is intended to strengthen transparency and verify the integrity of the results without halting the current manual review of contested votes. The election has been marked by confusion, with several candidates raising allegations of fraud. The head of the electoral authority resigned in late April amid growing pressure, although he had denied any major irregularities. European Union observers previously reported finding no evidence of widespread fraud.

Peruvian officials have indicated that final results should be announced no later than May 15. The call for an IT audit reflects efforts to ease tensions in the Andean nation and ensure the democratic process is seen as fair and reliable by all parties. The coming days will be critical as authorities work to complete the count and address public concerns.
