Police Clash with Anti-Linda Mwananchi Protesters In Homa bay
Business activities in Homa Bay Town came to a temporary halt on Tuesday after groups of young people staged demonstrations against the detention of six individuals.
The unrest erupted in response to the arrest of suspects linked to an alleged attack on organisers preparing for an opposition gathering. Demonstrators set fires and blocked several roads, prompting shop owners to lock their premises as officers moved in to clear the streets and return calm to the area.
Police confirmed that the six people had been taken into custody over claims they assaulted members of the planning team for the Linda Mwananchi public meeting set for the sixteenth of August in the town. Homa Bay Police Commander Lawrence Koilem stated that security personnel had been stationed throughout the location to contain the disorder and allow normal trade to resume. Officers continued efforts to maintain stability while investigations into the reported assault moved forward.
Witnesses described scenes of protesters shouting slogans against the planned rally while engaging in running clashes with police who worked to remove burning tyres and scattered debris from the roads. The disturbances forced motorists to find other routes and left sections of the town without regular transport or commercial activity for hours. Organisers of the upcoming rally pointed to the arrests as evidence of wider pressure directed at opposition supporters. Linda Mwananchi Coordinator Samuel Nyauke insisted the assault formed part of a larger pattern rather than a single occurrence. He stated that the group sought peace throughout its political activities yet faced accusations of actions it had not committed, adding that if official protection proved insufficient the organisers would arrange their own security measures.
Despite the recent friction and the temporary shutdown of local commerce, planners of the August gathering maintained that the meeting would still take place. The episode highlighted rising political strain in the lakeside region as different sides prepared for the public forum. Residents and business owners now hope that calm will hold so that daily life and the planned political event can proceed without further interruption.
