Police in Busia Seize Illegal Liquor and Suspected Drugs from Nairobi-Bound Bus

Police officers in Busia County successfully intercepted a large quantity of contraband liquor and suspected narcotics during a routine check on a public service vehicle heading to Nairobi.
The operation took place on May 3, 2026, at the Suo roadblock along the Busia-Kisumu Road. A multi-agency team stopped the bus for inspection and uncovered hidden illegal goods.
Officers discovered twenty-four packages containing uncustomed Simba Gin, with each package holding twenty-four 200ml bottles. In addition, they recovered five bales of substances believed to be cannabis sativa. The driver of the bus was immediately arrested and is now in custody awaiting court proceedings. Police have also launched a search for another suspect who managed to escape during the operation.
The vehicle has been detained as investigations continue. Authorities described the seizure as part of ongoing efforts to stop the movement of illegal goods and curb drug trafficking across the region. Such operations are common in border areas where smugglers often try to transport restricted items to larger markets.
This latest incident serves as a reminder of the persistent challenge of illicit trade in the country. Police have called on members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities. The successful interception is expected to help disrupt supply chains for illegal substances and unlicensed alcohol in the area.
