Police Officer Jailed for 30 Years After Killing Colleague in Eldoret Bar

A police officer has been sentenced to 30 years in prison by the High Court in Eldoret for the murder of a fellow security officer.
The incident occurred on February 27, 2024, at around 1:00 p.m. at VDM Liquor Store in Eldoret. Ali Ahmed Mohammed, who was attached to the Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit in Trans Nzoia Sub-County, fatally shot his colleague, Anthony Pkiror Areutum, during a confrontation.
According to court evidence, Mohammed had just completed his shift and was issued a Taurus pistol. While inside the liquor store, the victim raised concerns about how the firearm was being handled and suggested it be placed safely. This led to an argument, after which Mohammed became irritated, pointed the pistol, and it discharged. The shot killed Areutum on the spot and also injured Mohammed himself.
Justice Reuben Nyakundi, who delivered the judgment, found Mohammed guilty of murder. The judge noted that no valid reasons such as self-defence, provocation, or accidental discharge were presented in mitigation. He emphasised that the gun, meant to protect the public, was instead used to take the life of another officer. Mohammed was immediately taken to Eldoret GK Prison to begin serving his sentence. The case has sparked discussions on responsible firearm handling among security personnel.
