President William Ruto has announced a new plan that will allow teachers to acquire homes under the government’s Affordable Housing Programme through direct deductions from their salaries.
Speaking on Monday, October 5, 2026, during the World Teachers’ Day celebrations at Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi, Ruto said the Affordable Housing Board (AHB) is working with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to establish a check-off system that will enable teachers to pay for their houses directly from their monthly earnings.
“We are now making those homes easier to acquire. AHB is working with TSC on a check-off system so that you can pay for your home directly from your salary,” the President said.
Under the proposed arrangement, a portion of a teacher’s monthly salary would be deducted automatically and directed towards payment for the selected housing unit.
Ruto also announced that the government is working with teachers’ Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies (SACCOs) to develop financing packages tailored to teachers’ incomes.
The initiative is intended to give teachers access to housing financing options that match their ability to repay, as the government expands its Affordable Housing Programme.
Teachers interested in the programme can apply for their preferred housing units through the Boma Yangu platform on eCitizen.
The announcement builds on an agreement signed in September 2025 between the Affordable Housing Board, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET).
Under the agreement, the government committed to reserving 20 per cent of all affordable housing units for teachers — meaning one in every five units would be set aside for members of the teaching profession.
The latest plan therefore provides a proposed mechanism through which teachers can finance the purchase of the reserved units through their regular salaries, while also accessing additional financing options through their SACCOs.
The government is expected to work with TSC and other stakeholders to operationalise the check-off system and facilitate teachers’ access to the housing units.
