President Ruto Heads to Ethiopia for Key AU Assembly Session

President William Ruto departed Nairobi on the afternoon of February 13, 2026, heading to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to take part in the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Assembly of Heads of State and Government.

The summit, set for February 14–15 at the AU headquarters, comes at a time of heightened global uncertainty and shifting economic dynamics, with African leaders expected to outline continental priorities and push forward Agenda 2063 for long-term development and integration.

In his dual role as the AU Champion for Institutional Reform, President Ruto will deliver a progress report aimed at bolstering the Union's effectiveness, credibility, and financial independence. He will also chair the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC), presenting its findings to solidify Africa's unified stance on climate action, adaptation, resilience, and access to climate finance. Additionally, he is scheduled to lead the inaugural meeting of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Committee to promote deeper regional integration and boost intra-African trade.

Beyond the main plenary discussions, the President plans to engage in several bilateral meetings on the sidelines to strengthen partnerships in areas such as trade, investment, healthcare, and security. These interactions are intended to rally support for Kenya's domestic transformation goals, including major advancements in infrastructure, irrigation-driven agro-industrial growth, and reliable energy supply. State House described the trip as a strategic opportunity to advance both continental cooperation and national interests amid evolving international challenges.
