President Ruto Promises to Make Nairobi Safer and More Secure Within Six Months

President William Ruto has promised to transform Nairobi into a brighter, safer and more secure city within the next six months.

He made the pledge while addressing a special sitting of the Nairobi County Assembly on April 9, 2026. The President said the government has put in place a clear plan backed by funding to bring visible changes to the capital.

Under the plan, the government will install 50,000 street lighting points across the city. This includes repairing 40,000 existing lights and adding 10,000 new solar-powered and smart streetlights. Work on the lights has already started, with installation beginning this month. President Ruto said that by the end of May, residents should start seeing improvements in key areas, and within six months the city will be noticeably brighter and safer.

The President also spoke about improving electricity supply in informal settlements, starting with Hospital Ward and later extending to areas like Kibra, Korogocho, Mathare and Kamukunji. He added that the government is working on water and sanitation projects, including new waterworks and sewer lines, to make daily life better for Nairobi residents. He described these steps as important for safety, dignity and economic growth in the city.
