Presidential Jet Returns After Major Upgrades
The country’s presidential aircraft, known as Harambee One, has returned home following a year-long maintenance and upgrade programme in the Netherlands.
The Fokker 70, designated KAF308, left in August 2025 for comprehensive work carried out by Fokker Services Group. The overhaul went beyond standard servicing to include deep maintenance, interior improvements, and significant system enhancements.
A key addition is the Gogo Galileo FDX satellite communications system, supplied by GoGo Business Aviation. This technology connects to Eutelsat OneWeb’s low Earth orbit network, delivering high-speed internet with download speeds reaching 195 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 32 Mbps. A full-duplex electronically steered antenna ensures continuous connectivity throughout the flight.
Interior refurbishment formed another important part of the project, carried out alongside broader systems upgrades. Originally designed for around 70 passengers, the aircraft was later adapted for presidential and VIP use with a 26-seat configuration that offers greater space and range for official travel. These changes help maintain its readiness for continued service.
Acquired in 1995, the jet has supported presidential travel for more than three decades and has carried four leaders of the country. Its extended absence meant reliance on alternative and chartered aircraft for some official trips, arrangements that drew public attention due to associated costs. The return of Harambee One is expected to ease that dependence in the near term.
The upgrades mark a new phase in the aircraft’s operational life, ensuring it remains capable and modern for future duties. While it has yet to resume full flying operations since arriving back, the enhanced systems and refreshed interior position it well for ongoing use. This investment supports efficient and reliable transport for the head of state.
