Raging floods leave Amukura West in despair

Floods leave Odiria families homeless as heavy rains batter Amukura West Ward.
Several families in Odiria village, Amoni and Akiriamasit in Amukura West Ward Teso South-Busia County, have been left homeless after flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall swept through the area on Saturday night.
The floods, which residents say struck without warning, destroyed homes and property, forcing more than 70 families—including children and the elderly—to spend the night in the open amid cold conditions.
Led by the area MCA Dr. Boniface Erute, alongside community leaders Alina Etyang and Robert Ekoleit, have raised concerns over a possible outbreak of waterborne diseases due to the stagnant flood waters and poor sanitation conditions in the temporary shelter, two children reportedly rushed to the hospital over severe malaria.
“We were caught off guard. The water came in very fast at night, and we had no time to save anything. Our houses are submerged, and ongoing school children books also have been swept away by the water, our farms are down, women's have run away, and we have nothing to start on. " ~ Residents.
They have further warned that learning activities at Odiria Primary School acted as a rescue place for the displaced families and could be disrupted. Dr.Erute has urged both the national and county disaster management teams to urgently step in and assist the affected families, calling for immediate provision of shelter, food, and medical support.
“This is a serious situation that requires urgent intervention to ensure the safety and welfare of those affected,I'm calling upon the office of the governor that is handling the issue of emergencies to step in with immediate effect.the emergency fund for the county is there, let them come and help". ~ MCA Dr. Boniface Erute.
The incident comes as heavy rains continue to pound several parts of the country, raising fears of more flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable regions to remain vigilant and move to safer ground where necessary.
