Raila Amolo Odinga Mausoleum and Museum to Be Completed by June 2026

The construction of a dedicated mausoleum for the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga at his ancestral home in Bondo, Siaya County, is on track for completion by June 2026.
This development comes approximately four months after Raila Odinga's passing on October 15, 2025, at the age of 80 while receiving medical treatment in India. He was laid to rest on October 19, 2025, in a private ceremony at the family homestead in Kang'o ka Jaramogi, next to his father, the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga (Kenya's first Vice President), whose mausoleum already stands as a historical and cultural site.
The new mausoleum for Raila is part of broader efforts to preserve and honor his legacy as a towering figure in Kenyan politics, known for his advocacy for democracy, multi-partyism, social justice, and pan-Africanism. Recent discussions between the Odinga family (including representatives like Raila Odinga Jr.) and government officials, such as Principal Secretary for Culture, Arts, and Heritage Ummi Bashir, have focused on the project. It is envisioned to include not only the mausoleum but also a museum component to showcase artifacts, documents, and tributes related to Raila's life and contributions.
The Kenyan government has pledged support for the initiative, collaborating with the family to develop the site into a commemorative space that highlights Raila's role in Kenya's political history, diplomacy, and the fight for African solidarity. This aligns with earlier announcements from officials like Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei, who emphasized working with the family to create a lasting memorial at the Bondo ancestral home.
The mausoleum is being built near Raila's burial site, which was prepared adjacent to Jaramogi's mausoleum. The existing family site already serves as a protected cultural landmark, with plans for modernization including digital archives, guided tours, and exhibitions to educate future generations.
The announcement, widely shared by media outlets like Kenyans.co.ke on February 5, 2026, underscores ongoing national recognition of Raila Odinga's enduring impact. The June 2026 target is seen as symbolically significant, potentially aligning with milestones in commemorating his life and contributions.
This project reflects a collective effort to immortalize one of Kenya's most influential leaders, ensuring his legacy remains accessible and celebrated at the family homestead that has long been a pilgrimage site for admirers.
