Raila Odinga Junior has broken his silence on a widely shared video that showed him greeting members of the public through a fence in Kilgoris, firmly rejecting suggestions that the encounter took place at President William Ruto’s private residence.
In a statement released on Tuesday, he explained that the footage was recorded at the public airstrip in the town shortly after he stepped off an aircraft. Residents who recognised him waved and called out, prompting a brief exchange across the barrier.
Odinga Junior described the fence visible in the clip as a standard safety structure that separates members of the public from the aircraft landing and taxiing area. He said he simply responded to the greetings in the same friendly manner he adopts whenever members of the public approach him. The clarification was issued after the video triggered intense online discussion, with some citizens of the country interpreting the scene as an attempt to address residents who had supposedly been denied entry to the president’s home.
The speculation arose in connection with Charlene Ruto’s traditional engagement ceremony held in Kilgoris on Saturday. Social media posts accompanying the video alleged that local residents had been left outside the residence while invited guests attended the event, and that Odinga Junior had sought to engage those locked out. He has now dismissed that account as inaccurate and unrelated to the actual circumstances of the recording.
As one of the invited guests at the ceremony, Odinga Junior confirmed his presence in Kilgoris for the family occasion. The viral clip, however, captured a separate moment at the airstrip rather than any interaction near the private residence. By issuing a prompt statement accompanied by the original context, he sought to put the misinterpretations to rest and restore a clear record of events.
