Videos shared online captured the barricades in place around 7am, leaving some vehicles stranded and unable to enter the town while organizers and supporters made final preparations for the event. The sudden appearance of these obstacles created uncertainty and concern among locals who rely on smooth access for daily activities. It remains unclear who was responsible for placing the stones or exactly when the blockades went up, adding to the sense of unease in the community.
The disruption occurred despite previous promises from authorities that the event would proceed under full protection. Officials had given assurances to the organizers that security measures would safeguard participants and allow the meeting to take place without interference. This development raised questions about how effectively those commitments were being carried out on the ground. Internal Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo had earlier spoken in support of the right to assemble, emphasizing that people in the country enjoy constitutional freedom to gather and discuss matters of public interest no matter their political leanings. “Whether they do whichever formation, everybody has a right to go to any part, any corner of the country and converse their issues,” he stated. His remarks aimed to reassure leaders connected to the gathering that the state recognized their entitlement to organize and attend such forums freely.
At the same time, Omollo stressed the importance of responsibility during any public event. “The position is very clear, everybody is free to go anywhere while at it; the expectation is that they must observe law and order,” he added. He made it plain that while the freedom to meet exists, participants must uphold peace and avoid any actions that could disrupt public order or endanger others in attendance.
Security agencies stand ready to respond firmly to anyone who might exploit political meetings for harmful purposes. “Criminal elements or criminal acts that are either related to politics or political contestation will not be tolerated. We should not allow ourselves to be misused by any political player for their own self-interest,” Omollo warned. As the day unfolded, the situation in Homa Bay underscored the delicate balance between protecting democratic expression and ensuring calm in public spaces ahead of significant political activities.
