Rodri Completes Barcelona Switch in Major Deal

Barcelona have reached an agreement with Manchester City to sign midfielder Rodri in a deal worth up to 76.5 million euros.

The transfer ends a prolonged summer pursuit and brings the Spain international back to his home country after seven years in England. City accepted Barcelona’s third bid over the weekend, structured as 60 million euros upfront plus 16.5 million euros in performance-related add-ons.

Rodri still had one year remaining on the contract he signed with City in 2022, a factor that limited the selling club’s leverage in negotiations. At the age of 30, the player made clear his preference to return to Spain and specifically to Barcelona rather than join Real Madrid, who had also shown interest. Barcelona have offered him a four-year contract, with a potential presentation planned during the Joan Gamper Trophy match against Al Ahly.

The midfielder leaves City after a highly successful spell that included scoring the winning goal in the 2023 Champions League final and collecting the Ballon d’Or in 2024. He also captained Spain to World Cup glory earlier this summer, earning the Golden Ball as the tournament’s outstanding player. A minor back operation in late July meant he missed City’s recent Community Shield defeat to Arsenal.

For Barcelona, the signing addresses a midfield shortage created by Frenkie de Jong’s ongoing recovery from a knee injury sustained at the World Cup. Coach Hansi Flick has relied on younger options in the holding role, but Rodri represents a significant upgrade as the club defends its domestic title. The Catalan side have already added other high-profile attackers this summer to strengthen the squad.

City will now prepare for the new Premier League season without the player who anchored their midfield for seven campaigns. Neither club had issued a formal public statement on the agreement by Monday, though the outlines of the deal have been widely reported. The move marks a major shift for both teams as the transfer window approaches its final stages.
