Sakaja Blasts IG Kanja Over 7pm Police Raid at City Hall

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has criticised Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja after armed police officers surrounded City Hall on Monday evening in an attempt to arrest him.

The incident took place after 7pm on March 30, 2026. Sakaja had already left his office by that time.

Speaking on Tuesday, March 31, Sakaja questioned the timing of the operation. “Who is in the office at 7pm?” he asked. He described the move as unnecessary drama and said he is ready to face any issues through the right channels. The police action followed his failure to appear before the Senate’s County Public Accounts Committee over audit queries on Nairobi County’s finances.

The attempted arrest has caused tension between the Senate and county governors. Sakaja said he was following a decision by the Council of Governors not to appear until certain concerns are addressed. The Council of Governors has condemned the police raid and called for the withdrawal of the arrest warrant. As of now, no arrest was made since the governor was not present at City Hall during the evening operation.
