Samburu Residents Protest in Support of Governor Lati Lelelit

Hundreds of residents in Samburu County took to the streets of Maralal town wearing T-shirts printed with the words “Sisi Ndio Lati”.

The peaceful demonstration was held to show solidarity with their governor, Jonathan Lati Lelelit, following an alleged physical confrontation with several senators at Parliament buildings in Nairobi. The residents expressed anger over what they described as disrespect and an attack on their elected leader.

The protesters specifically called on Senator Edwin Sifuna and other senators involved to respect Governor Lati and the office he holds. They argued that any oversight by the Senate should be done in a dignified manner without descending into personal conflicts. Many carried placards and chanted slogans affirming their support for the governor, emphasising that he represents the will of the people of Samburu.

The incident at the Senate reportedly occurred after Governor Lati was approached over claims that he had failed to honour summons related to audit queries. The Council of Governors has since condemned the alleged assault, describing it as an attack on both the individual and the constitutional role of county leaders. The protest in Samburu highlights the strong local backing for the governor amid the ongoing tensions between some county and national leaders.
